Ausone 2024 Release

Château Ausone has released its 2024 vintage at €312 per bottle ex-négociant, the lowest price since 2013. This follows a trend of fluctuating prices, with recent vintages like 2023 at €432, 2022 at €565, and the 2010 peak at €1,120. The 2024 vintage, a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, was harvested from September 30 to October 5. Mildew and coulure reduced Merlot yields, shaping a Cabernet Franc-driven profile. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak from five cooperages, with malolactic fermentation in barrel.

Critics have rated the 2024 Ausone highly. Neal Martin (Vinous) awards 93-95 points, noting pure black cherry and wild strawberry aromas with a velvety palate, though less complex than top Ausone vintages. William Kelley (Wine Advocate) gives 91-93 points, citing blackberry, toasty oak, and espresso, with ripe tannins and oak structure. Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scores 96 points, praising a refined mineral-fruit balance with blackcurrant bud and violet notes, excelling in a challenging vintage. Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Independent) assigns 95-97 points, highlighting black cherry and raspberry with vibrant acidity and silky texture. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scores 93-96 points, Jeb Dunnuck 94-97 points, and James Lawther (Jancis Robinson) 17/20 points. The wine is suited for drinking from 2027 to 2055.

Historically, Ausone’s pricing reflects market and vintage dynamics. The 2024 price, significantly lower than recent years, pairs with high critical acclaim, positioning it as a compelling option in the en primeur market. The vintage demonstrates Château Ausone’s ability to deliver quality despite climatic challenges, maintaining its reputation for elegance and precision.
