Cobblestone Acquires Knappogue Castle and Clontarf in Strategic Irish Whiskey Play

Cobblestone Brands’ acquisition of Knappogue Castle and Clontarf Irish whiskeys from Pernod Ricard’s Irish Distillers, announced on July 24, 2025, marks a bold step in the fast-evolving global spirits market. This deal signals Cobblestone’s ambition to capitalize on the surging popularity of Irish whiskey while Pernod Ricard sharpens its focus on core brands.

Irish whiskey is gaining ground as a global contender, with exports growing 9.3% annually from 2010 to 2022, per the Irish Whiskey Association. Once overshadowed by Scotch and bourbon, the category now thrives on its heritage and versatility, appealing to both mature and emerging markets. Cobblestone’s CEO, Brian Fagan, sees untapped potential in Knappogue Castle’s elegant single malts and Clontarf’s approachable blends. “We believe deeply in the future of Irish whiskey,” Fagan says. “Despite industry challenges, now is the time to invest in quality and authenticity.”

The deal is a pivotal move for Cobblestone, which already boasts Four Corners American Gin and Star & Key Rum in its portfolio. COO Barry Gallagher outlines plans for significant investments in marketing, innovation, and route-to-market expansion, with further details expected soon. Cobblestone also aims to launch three new-to-world brands within the next 12 months, reinforcing its goal to build a diverse, premium spirits portfolio with global reach.

For Pernod Ricard, the sale aligns with a broader strategy to streamline operations and prioritize high-growth brands like Redbreast and Midleton Very Rare. Irish Distillers’ CEO, Nodjame Fouad, notes, “This divestment allows us to focus on our core portfolio and accelerate growth.” Recent moves, including the €412.6 million sale of Imperial Blue in India and wine assets like Jacob’s Creek to Australian Wine Holdco, reflect Pernod Ricard’s push for agility and premiumization in a competitive market.

Cobblestone faces challenges in a category dominated by giants like Jameson and Bushmills. Revitalizing heritage brands demands not just marketing but also supply chain precision and consumer insight to tap trends like craft spirits and authentic storytelling. Yet, the company’s confidence is clear. As Fagan states, “We’re proud to be the new custodians of these brands.”
