Carlsberg has strengthened its Vietnam operations with a $90 million expansion of its Phu Bai brewery, unveiled on August 26, 2025, in Hue. Now its largest production hub in Asia, the project underscores Vietnam’s pivotal role in Carlsberg’s global strategy, balancing market growth with sustainability.
Vietnam, Asia’s third-largest and the world’s ninth-largest beer market, is driven by a young population, rising incomes, and rapid urbanization. Since 1993, Carlsberg has grown its presence with Huda, a Central Vietnam favorite, alongside global brands like Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Tuborg, and Somersby. “Vietnam’s market potential and strong local teams make it central to our Asia strategy,” says Joy Rice, Vice President for Integrated Supply Chain at Carlsberg Asia. The Phu Bai expansion, boosting capacity by 50%, enhances Carlsberg’s ability to meet rising demand.
The brewery combines advanced technology with sustainability. A new brew line reduces water use by 20% and energy by 15%, while Vietnam’s fastest packaging line ensures efficiency. Powered by iREC-certified renewable electricity and biomass steam, Phu Bai treats all wastewater and hit a water efficiency of 2.09 hl/hl in 2024, aiming for 2.0 hl/hl by 2026. Carlsberg targets zero waste to landfill by late 2025, net-zero production emissions by 2028, and 100% reusable or recyclable packaging by 2026. Huda and Halida’s Monde Selection Gold Quality Awards highlight the brewery’s high standards.

This expansion strengthens Carlsberg’s edge in Vietnam’s competitive beer market, where premiumization offers growth opportunities against rivals like Heineken and Sabeco. Partnerships with quick-commerce platforms like Meituan, Grab, and Delivery Hero amplify Carlsberg’s urban reach, while Phu Bai supports both local and global brands, positioning the company to capture Vietnam’s evolving tastes.
The Phu Bai expansion establishes Vietnam as a model for Carlsberg’s Asia ambitions. By integrating innovation and sustainability, Carlsberg sets a new standard for the region’s beer industry, with potential to shape markets beyond Vietnam.
